Julia Gumanova

Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Moscow State University; PhD in Sociology.
 

Educational Background: a graduate of Moscow State Linguistic University, Teachers' Training Department, MA in Linguistics. Additional training: Coventry University, UK, Techniques and Methods of Teaching English.

Fields of research and expertise: Intercultural communication, cross-cultural analysis of discourse, sociolinguistic problems of multiethnic society. Julia's dissertation on the socio-linguistic aspects of political correctness in Russia, the UK and the USA was nominated among the best works by MSU scholars in 2000.

Academic reviews of dissertations and master theses: reviewing dissertations in the field of intercultural communication and social studies.

Julia designs and teaches courses in general and legal English at the Law School of MSU and the Faculty of World Politics. She also lectures to post-graduate students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages. She is engaged in development of examination materials for entrance examinations, mid- and end-term assessment, final and post-graduate exams at the Law School.

Special Projects: Julia is the leader of the Just English team of authors, the prestigious MSU Shouvalov award winner; she is the author and coordinator of the international project War on Terror: Insight into Global Issues, as part of which she prepared and ran a series of interviews with prominent politicians, experts in the field and scholars who contributed to the project.

In March 2006 Julia took part in a special edition of Question Time, the BBC's premier political programme. The topics discussed were: Russia's G8 presidency; sanctions on Iran; spying games; energy and super-power status; the prospects of democracy and freedom of speech in Russia.

Julia organises workshops and master-classes for teachers and translators of legal English. The most popular is the annual "English for Law Students. Original Approaches and Techniques. "

Julia works in close co-operation with colleagues from Universities in Russia and the UK, and arranges invitations for visiting professors/lecturers from the UK, as well as practicing lawyers from the City of London.

Publications: Altogether more than 30 published works, among them 10 original textbooks and course books (co-authored). Julia is a member of editorial board of the almanac "The Distinguished Women in the History of Moscow State University" and a co-author in Russian and foreign on-line publications.

Educational Background: a graduate of Moscow State University, Faculty of Philology, MA in Linguistics (Distinction) and Coventry University, School of International Studies and Law (MA in Diplomacy and Politics).

Dissertation (Moscow University, Faculty of Philology): Romantic short stories in American literature of the 19th century - analysis of short stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Dissertation (Coventry University, School of International Studies and Law): International Control of Drug Trafficking - analysis of the current situation in this sphere, international instruments of regulation and problems, with the focus on the UK and Russia.

Vladilena worked as a Lecturer at Moscow State Linguistic University (Interpreter's Department) and later at Moscow State University (Faculty of Foreign Languages). She has an extensive teaching experience, working with a broad range of students in the academia and business in Russia and the UK. For the last 5 years she has worked at Kingston University in the UK (Faculty of Humanities, School of Languages) as Lecturer in Russian and as a freelance Russian tutor for leading London language schools.

Vladilena designs and teaches courses at all levels, from ab initio to very advanced, including general/colloquial Russian, legal Russian, Russian for business and finance, translation/interpreting, cultural and area studies. She devises tests and assessments, provides language and cultural consultancy. Among her students are not only undergraduates and postgraduates but also professionals in business, economics and law in the City of London.

Academic Interests: Methodology of teaching Russian and English as foreign languages, Literature, British/Western European culture.
